Choosing the Right Grinder for the Job
A grinder is one of the most useful tools in any Kenyan workshop, from jua kali welding to tiling and home repairs. Picking the right one saves time, money and effort.
- Small angle grinders (4.5"–5", 750–900 W) are the everyday choice. They are light and easy to control, and they cut metal, grind welds and smooth rough edges. They suit fundis, welders and DIY users.
- Large angle grinders (7"–9", 2000–2200 W) cut thick steel, concrete and stone faster. Use them for heavy construction and fabrication work.
- Mini grinders (130 W) are made for small, detailed tasks such as engraving, polishing and fine finishing.
- Bench grinders (125–150 mm) are fixed to a workbench and are ideal for sharpening chisels, pangas, drill bits and blades.
Match the disc to the job: metal cutting discs for steel, diamond discs for tiles and concrete, and flap discs for finishing. The speed rating on the disc must be the same as the grinder's speed or higher. Always wear goggles, gloves and ear protection, and never remove the guard.
